Am I Ready for Yoga Teacher Training? 4 Signs You’re Ready!

"But I can't even touch my toes!"
This is probably one of the most common things I hear from people considering yoga teacher training. After twenty years of practicing and teaching yoga, I can tell you something with absolute certainty - flexibility has very little to do with being ready for this journey.
The question of readiness for yoga teacher training often comes with a swirl of self-doubt and misconceptions. Let's explore what being "ready" really means, and why you might be more prepared than you think.
Breaking Down the Myths
First, let's address those nagging doubts that might be holding you back. You know the ones - "I'm not advanced enough," "I don't know all the pose names," "I'm not flexible enough," "I've only been practicing for a year."
Here's the truth - yoga teacher training isn't about being perfect at poses or knowing everything already. If that were the case, what would be the point of training? It's about having the intrinsic desire to learn, the curiosity to explore, and the commitment to grow.
4 Signs You’re Ready for Your YTT
The real markers of readiness have nothing to do with touching your toes or mastering a handstand. They're much simpler - and yet somehow more profound. So, what actually matters?
1. A Regular Practice
This doesn't mean you're practicing for hours every day. It means you've established some consistency in your yoga journey, whether that's two classes a week or a daily 15-minute morning practice. What matters is that yoga has become a part of your life's rhythm. And don’t be fooled, it’s not always about asana. But dipping in and out of meditation, journalling, eating and living cleanly, or simple contemplation practices like walking in nature, are all yoga too.
2. Curiosity about the Journey
Perhaps the most important sign of readiness is simply wanting to know more. Maybe you've found yourself wondering about the 'why' behind certain poses, or you're curious about the philosophy that underpins this ancient practice. That curiosity is worth more than being able to do any advanced pose.
You might find yourself:
Thinking about yoga even when you're off the mat
Noticing how your practice affects other areas of your life
Wanting to understand the deeper aspects of yoga
Feeling drawn to share what you're learning with others
These wonderings are your inner teacher beginning to emerge.
3. The Physical Reality
Let's talk honestly about the physical aspect of yoga teacher training. Yes, you'll be practicing asana (poses), but a good training programme is designed to meet you where you are. You don't need to be the most flexible or strongest person in the room.
What you do need is:
A body that you're willing to listen to
An understanding of your own limitations
The wisdom to respect where you are today
A willingness to explore and grow safely
Remember, some of the most insightful teaching comes from working with your own challenges and limitations. They help you understand how to make yoga accessible for everyone. And ultimately, you’ll teach what you experience, and this is what will resonate with others.
4. Mental and Emotional Readiness
This is where the real preparation matters. Teacher training is as much about personal growth as it is about learning to teach. Consider whether:
You're Open to Growth
Training will challenge you to look at yourself, your patterns, and your beliefs. Being ready means being willing to embrace this self-exploration.
You Can Commit the Time
Most trainings require a significant time investment over several months. While many programmes (especially online ones) offer flexibility, you'll need to carve out regular time for learning, practice, and reflection.
You're Ready to Be a Beginner
Even if you're advanced in your physical practice, you'll be learning new skills and perspectives. Being comfortable with not knowing everything is a valuable trait.
Signs You're More Ready Than You Think
Still unsure? Here are some subtle signs that might indicate you're ready for this journey:
You feel excited (even if also nervous) about the possibility
Your practice has become more than just physical exercise
You find yourself wanting to share yoga with others
You're ready for a new chapter of growth in your life
You're asking thoughtful questions about readiness (yes, reading this article counts!)
Making Your Decision
Remember, there's no perfect time or perfect state of readiness. What matters most is your willingness to learn and grow. Teacher training is not about being the most advanced student - it's about embarking on a journey of deeper understanding.
Trust that if you're feeling called to this path, there's a reason. The very act of considering teacher training shows an evolution in your relationship with yoga.
Whether you decide to begin now or wait a while longer, honour where you are in your journey. The right training programme will meet you there and help you grow from that point, one breath, one pose, one discovery at a time.
